The Mountain Home

In 2022 I met with my friend and seasoned Asheville architect, John Rogers to look over some work he needed at his home in the mountains north of town. Little did I know the exciting opportunity he had in mind for me. I had worked with John back in '07 while with Beverly-Grant to complete the shell remodel of the former First Union Bank building, now the Capital Center along with several of its current upfits. John had been retired for years but he had one project in mind and thought B Three just might be the contractor for the job.

The project was a modern mountain home built on a nose slope high overlooking Weaverville, NC. The proposed site was steep, well forested and far off the road. A landscape architect produced a detailed site plan. An engineer's design was required for the massive vaulted ceiling and sturdy foundations. Between design work, creating the budget and hashing out details, this home was in the works for years before we even broke ground.

Spring of '24 came and it was time to go! In the midst of a very wet spring work on the driveway, house seat and foundations slogged forward. Soon with framing in place we could see the vision begin to take form.

Tricky details did abound - like the great room ceiling/roof detail with double layers of R15 continuous insulation sandwiched between the tongue and groove finished surface below and the bronze standing seam metal roof above. There were also the wonderful windows that must stack from waist height and fill in the gable up to the ceiling. These windows kept us on our toes from pre construction all the way through until the trim work was completed.

At each milestone such beautiful gems appeared that upon every walk through, I was more and more astounded. I finally declared that building this was like a dream come true.
With a sense of friendship and pride, we wound down this beauty near the end of January. The winter was so mild, you could just feel another fresh exciting spring right around the corner. Now I am looking forward to a few more trips up the mountain to see it against the backdrop of the redbuds and dogwood blossoms with the neon green fresh tipped poplars and maples at our most stunning season here in WNC.
