How long will my project take?

I used to be very wary of answering this question or others like it. “How much will it cost?” is even more dangerous. My favorite answer to this second one comes from fellow BRHBA member and expert Asheville remodeler Gus Adams: “How many dollars worth of groceries can you fit into a grocery bag?” Each project is unique, and surprises will arise. However, I’ll offer some timelines as a starting point for most situations. Keep in mind these timelines cover the period from the first appearance of workers on site to the final cleaning. They don’t include any preliminary design, pricing, permitting, or administrative tasks.

Remodeling

Bathrooms

When it comes to bathroom remodels, two activities can significantly extend the timeline: custom glass doors and larger custom granite vanity tops that can’t be prepped before cabinet installation. Opting for off-the-shelf glass doors for showers or baths, or ordering vanities with pre-sized tops and backsplashes, can save a lot of time. Additionally, tile work adds a respectable amount of time, especially when water-tight assemblies like shower walls and pans are required.

  • Half bath: ~3-4 weeks

  • Hall bathroom (full bath): ~6 weeks

  • Master bathroom: ~8 weeks

Kitchens

Kitchens can be a bit more complex. Factors contributing to increased duration include moving appliances and fixtures, increasing the footprint of the space, and making structural changes like adding windows or removing walls. Countertops are a given in any kitchen remodel, but butcher block tops can be installed without delay after the cabinets are in place.

  • Kitchen update, keeping the same basic layout: ~8 weeks

  • Changing layout, fixture locations, and increasing the footprint: ~10 weeks

  • Moving the kitchen into a new space added on: ~12 weeks

Whole Floor or Home Remodeling

If you're considering a kitchen or bathroom remodel along with other jobs or finishes throughout the house, the project duration shifts from weeks to months.

  • Smaller scale multi-room remodeling, including all or part of kitchens and bathrooms with minor structural reconfigurations: ~10-12 weeks

  • Wider whole floor or home remodeling with additions and major structural changes or repairs (similar to heavily damaged homes): ~4-5 months

Additions

Adding space to your home can also vary in time:

  • Family room addition: ~12 weeks

  • Family/laundry addition: ~14 weeks

  • Master bedroom/bathroom addition: ~16 weeks

New Construction

New construction is a world apart from remodeling projects. As I’ve mentioned in other posts, these projects require significant time spent upfront on design, finish selections, pricing, and working out all the details. After breaking ground, the duration can be lengthened due to tricky site conditions, septic, well, or other utility considerations, and the complexity of the home’s design.

  • Small studio building/apartment: ~10-12 weeks

  • Full-sized garage apartment: ~4 months

  • New home: ~6-12 months

Planning is Key

Before we begin any project, B Three Construction creates a project schedule. Time is valuable, and failing to plan is planning to fail. Below is an example of one of our simple schedules. Expect to see something at this level of detail before signing on with your contractor.

In conclusion, understanding the timelines for various home projects can help you plan better. Whether you're considering a bathroom update or a new home build, having a clear idea of what to expect can make the process smoother. Remember, every project is unique, so it's always best to consult with a professional to get the most accurate estimates tailored to your specific needs.
