The Bearfootin' Art Walk Inspiration

Each year, the city of Hendersonville, NC, hosts a delightful bear art show known as the Bearfootin' Art Walk. This year, creating a stunning piece for the show was just one of the many projects our repeat client was juggling when we started planning her Hendersonville kitchen remodel back in February of '24. It was both a challenge and an honor to return to this Edneyville home and bring her vision to life.

A Kitchen Full of Dreams: Hendersonville Remodel

Our client had a clear vision for her kitchen. She wanted a space that could handle lots of baking, especially since she processes tons of blueberries from her property’s 200+ bushes. To turn the home’s so-so cooking area into her dream kitchen, we needed to focus on storage and beautiful details. This transformation was best accomplished through doodles, marked-up photos, and sketches. Thankfully, our client was well-prepared with these materials.

The Importance of Design

In kitchen design, cabinets play a crucial role. Bringing in a design expert early can clarify the project scope, including plumbing locations, appliances, the work triangle, and storage opportunities. We hired a designer who provided a no-strings-attached floor plan and offered valuable insights. Sometimes, these ideas can lead to changes in the kitchen’s layout or even structural adjustments. Fortunately, we discovered that the wall we needed to remove was not load-bearing.

Custom Cabinets for a Unique Look

Shopping for standard box-sized cabinets didn’t quite meet our client’s aesthetic. That’s when we turned to Paul Konko at Konko’s Custom Cabinets. Custom cabinets not only matched our client's design wishes but also turned out to be more affordable than the closest match from a higher-end “custom” catalog. It was a win-win!

Navigating Challenges

Managing construction projects often comes with hiccups. I hope we never again face a challenge as significant as Hurricane Helene. She sent waters surging through WNC Tile’s warehouse and Konko’s workshops. Luckily, we hadn’t started the work in the home yet. While Paul and his brothers rebuilt, Mike Robert’s team at WNC salvaged the backsplash tile that had been submerged by the Swannanoa River. We were fortunate that the family was not living in a construction zone during this unscheduled delay.

The Excitement of Installation

Once we received the estimated install date from Paul, it was off to the races! All the selections for tile, appliances, and other long-lead items had arrived, setting us up for success. The kitchen began to take shape with wall infill, floor tile, and ceiling repairs. The big day of cabinet installation and countertop installation came and went. One of the highlights was a stunning mosaic backsplash behind the cooktop, which had been ordered months in advance from Beirut.

A Timely Completion

We like to plan for 12 weeks for an extensive kitchen remodel, so completing this project in just 11 weeks felt fantastic. Hearing back from our client, who expressed her continued enjoyment and love for the space, made the job even more fulfilling. One note of caution, though: be on the lookout the next time you visit Hendersonville—you just might run into her bear!
